About Our Book Club

Maadagindan – Start Reading is an online book club for parents, teachers, educators or anyone that loves to read to children. The book club focuses on Ojibwe culture and the Great Lakes. We meet seasonally, 4 times in the ziigwan (spring) and 4 times in the dagwaagin (autumn), to discuss the current book selections in a conversation led by an honored Native guest.

Current Season – Fall 2026

All meetings scheduled for 4:30 pm central time on Zoom.

The cover of "A Guide to Understanding Ojibwe Treaty Rights": seven animals representing the members of an 1849 Ojibwe delegation to Washington, on a birchbark background.

Ojibwe Treaty Rights

A Guide to Understanding Ojibwe Treaty Rights contains pertinent treaties, discusses the nature of treaty rights, provides historical background on the treaty rights, and details tribal resource management and GLIFWC activities.

Cover of "Rez Ball": a young man with shaggy brown hair stands looking out at the viewer. He has a basketball under one arm and wears a red tank top. He stands in front of an orange tree losing its leaves and a pink and orange-clouded sky.

Rez Ball

Tre Brun is a young athlete determined to play like the hero his community needs him to be. His older brother, Jaxon, died in an accident, and Tre wants to live up to his brother’s dreams and represent his Ojibwe rez, Red Lake Nation, all the way to their first basketball state championship – no matter how much the odds are stacked against him, and them.

Cover of "Ishkode: A Story of Fire": a small branch of blueberries, a twig with green pine needles, and a pinecone sit at the heart of an orange and yellow fire. The background is a mix of browns and oranges evoking more fire.

Ishkode: A Story of Fire

When an invitation arrives from the forest, what will you hear? What will you learn? How will you respond?

Ishkode: A Story of Fire invites readers into a beautiful stand of ancient red pines where Aanikoobijigan, a grandmother red pine who has witnessed centuries of connection between people, fire, and the land, guides a young woman, Animikiimiikanikwe, toward healing and renewal.
